SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Arachnoiditis is a progressive disease that can cause symptoms that are often debilitating and associated with disability. The condition is characterized by severe shooting pain of a stinging and burning quality that can be mild to severe and intractable. Depending on the location of the arachnoiditis, patients may have differing symptom location and neurologic sequelae. For example, the predominant symptom of lumbar arachnoiditis is pain in the lower back and lower extremities.

Arachnoiditis causes inflammation that can lead to the formation of scars and adhesions, which can cause the spinal nerves to coalesce and interfere with their function. This can result in the following symptoms:

• Tingling, numbness, or weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis

• Bizarre sensations such as insects crawling on the skin or water trickling down the leg.

• Muscle cramps, spasms, and twitching

• Bladder, bowel, and/or sexual dysfunction
